Fall Into Hypnosis with Sydney’s Lady Shave

A razor sharp mix and conversation with Sydney duo Lady Shave.
Lady Shave are a DJ duo and groomer's guide to the shimmering world of Balearic. With regular hypnotic sets in local culture clubs, Alysha Fleiter (Nite Fleit) and Yahna Fookes (DJ Seoul) are advocating the best in industrial, electronic and cosmic Italo, among other enriching finds in their fast-growing collections. If you haven't already caught them at their monthly residency at Ching-a-Lings, you can check the sharp work of their fine cutting skills for The Thousands, i-D Mag and Assemble Papers. The two ladies gliding through Sydney's night scene enlighten us with a mix and some insights ahead of their set at our THUMP Presents party this Thursday at Sydney's Cliff Dive.

How would you define the Lady Shave music policy?
Lady Shave: Dark! We relish in the darkness. Not too bleak but definitely hypnotic. When we first started playing; Alysha had a healthy obsession with Belgium New Beat and I was fixated with Cold Wave, but the more we play and dig etc, our musical taste is expanding. We have been known to play positive disco!

Where are the best celebrations of this kind of music?
I guess Lady Shave was born because we felt that there was a massive gap for this kind of celebration happening in Sydney and only a handful of DJs were playing music we could relate to. The Sydney DJ scene is also predominately run by men and Lady Shave is a testament that women are doing interesting things too.

What do you both do outside of the world of Lady Shave?
Work, dance, make mixes, watch Netflix, surf the web, beach, bathe and BBQ.

Any newly acquired records you're looking forward to unleash?
Hanging for the new Emotional Especial record "Mariam the Believer" – Invisible Giving (Wolf Muller Remix). We are massive fans of this label – Chuggy who runs it has immaculate taste! Some of our most loved and played tracks are released by him such as Jamie Paton, Khidja, Baris K - just to name a few. Timothy J Fairplay remixes are perfection! Also recently acquired a heap of records from Craig Bratleys label Magic Feet. So very excited, as you can probably tell from the mix.

Wax or shave?
Haha. Well actually the name Lady Shave comes from a Fad Gadget track which highlights the unrealistic pressure women are exposed to. In this way, our night represents more than our love of music and dancing. So in answer to your question, neither or both or all.

Lady Shave are appearing at the next THUMP Presents party alongside Michelle Owen And Kali at The Cliff Divein Sydney, Thursday October 16th. RSVP here.
